The Resurgence of Y2K: Trendy or Timeless?

Shayla Chambers

How do we decide what’s trendy or timeless? What’s considered as popular or fashionable is constantly changing. Certain looks cycle in and out of style while others are doomed to “falling off”. There may not be a general consensus on what is deemed timeless, however we can observe which trends have lost traction over time in comparison to others that have maintained relevance. We can also predict the trajectory of newer ones.

The resurgence of Y2K has rippled through the fashion industry in the last few years, simultaneously influencing the current clothing choices. Drawing nostalgia from the early 2000s, this category of style is perceived as a comforting reminder of a simpler yet lively time to millennials who grew up during that era. Tiktok is among the leading social media platforms that has propelled the trend to those who may not have been privy to it, furthering the impact of its influence. When assembling outfits, many intertwine their own modern twist while including elements of the characteristic styles like low rise jeans, tracksuits, and bold colors.

Although the popularity of Y2K hasn’t faded, time will determine if it's able to maintain longevity or if it’ll be subject to the cyclical nature of fashion as new styles emerge. Where do we think it’s heading?

Which era do you think the next wave of trends will draw inspiration from?
