Some iconic partnerships just make sense - Drake and Future (RIP), Virgil and Louis Vuitton and of course, Nicki Minaj and Versace.
Nicki just wrapped up the American Leg of her Gag City Tour on Monday, May 13 in Oklahoma City. Back on the road for the first time in nine years, Nicki had to pop out in memorable looks for the largest and most successful tour of her career.
To loyal Barbz, it was no surprise that Nicki wore several Versace looks throughout her three month stint across the US. The Harajuku Barbie has had a long-standing relationship with the iconic Italian fashion house since the beginning of her career.
Versace identifies with “a lifestyle and attitude that celebrates uniqueness and the power of a person who feels the ultimate freedom to be themselves”, according to their website. Considering Nicki’s unapologetic personality and approach to the rap game, constant collaboration makes perfect sense for the two.
Let’s take a look back at some of Nicki’s most iconic fashion moments with the brand.
Custom Versace Bodysuit Sets
Arguably one of the most memorable looks from the tour, Nicki rocked a pink diamond studded Versace bodysuit showing off her “new body”. The high halter neck ensemble still gave sex appeal with cutout and sheer bodice panels down the front. Matching thigh high diamond boots by the brand completed the shimmery set.
The look was styled with a flawless wig reminiscent of Nicki’s iconic “Pink Friday” era and sheer fishnet tights. Nicki also sported a silver version of the look throughout the tour, with a revealing cutout print and matching silver boots.
Custom Medusa Head Cape
When Nicki hit the 2012 Grammy red carpet in this look, the world knew she was about to put on a show. Her unforgettable theatrical performance that followed, captured all of the proud excess and production of Versace, immortalizing both her performance and this one of a kind look for the occasion.
The cape was actually supposed to be worn for the live performance according to a 2012 interview, but was too heavy. Nicki instead created a memorable photo-op in her ever quirky fashion, wearing the cape to the red carpet with a man dressed as the pope, poking fun at the controversy surrounding her choice to include elements from the Catholic church in her set.
Custom Versace Bondage Dress
Nicki stunned at the 2018 People’s Choice Awards in a Atelier Versace dress, where she won Female Artist of 2018. Donatella Versace herself designed the custom dress for the star. The original sketch for the dress was released exclusively to E!NEWS after the look caused a positive uproar online.
Venturing to the edgier side of Nicki’s style, the sheer black lace gown was decorated with leather bondage straps and embellished with gold buckles. An asymmetrical leather strap choker neckline and intricate purple beading on the skirt completed the look.
Vintage Versace
Versace pulled out all the stops for Gag City, including rare archive pieces. Nicki stunned in a Spring/Summer 2000 flowing lime green Versace gown. The elegant silhouette was composed of a form-fitting open back bodice with a deep v-neck, leading to ruching at the torso for emphasis on Nicki’s figure.
The flowy skirt included a high slit and the signature Versace medusa head logo in gold foil on the side. The bright green was likely a fun reference to her iconic green wig look in the “Beez In the Trap” video and perfectly complemented the rapper’s classic long pink waves.
Spring/Summer 2020 Versace
In 2020, celebrities were still stepping on the ‘gram, even without the red carpets and event appearances. Nicki hit our feeds chilling by the pool in Trinidad with a tropical floral set fresh off the runway.
Channeling the island vibes of Nicki’s native country, bright sunset shades of pink and orange dominate the bold Versace palm jacket and legging set, which Nicki styled herself with a neon pink bandeau top and matching laid wig. The look was paired with AQUAZZURA
crystal embellished pumps, a Louis Vuitton bag and cat eye shades.
