It’s true. Fashion trends tend to repeat themselves every 20 to 30 years. And although 2020-2021 was a rough year for us all, it proved this theory no different.
The 80s and 90s influence could be seen everywhere from the runway to fast fashion. Mom jeans are now in, velvet tracksuits are back, and now bucket hats are the new baseball caps. However, in the midst of political uproar, the corona virus, and nationwide protests, new trends emerged all the while – a melting pot of styles throughout the decades. Here are some of my favorites:
Trucker Hats
The mesh-backed trucker hat was made popular in the early 2000s by celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Pharrell, and Justin Timberlake is back once again. The name originated from truck drivers, farmers, and ranchers who needed a hat to keep their heads protected from the sun but also well ventilated in the back. The most popular ones today can be seen from brands such as Chrome Hearts and Von Dutch.

Varsity Jackets
In 2021, it is not a requirement to make the varsity team to be able to wear a letterman jacket. Originating in 1865, this jacket was created by football players who wanted a way to stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Now, this trend has made its way to not only high fashion but streetwear as well. I love seeing how this jacket is styled on both men and women. It’s a great statement piece and is offered in every color you can possibly imagine. You can ultimately do no wrong!

Low-Rise Jeans
What a controversial clothing item.
This look was made extremely popular by pop stars in 2001 like Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, and Nicole Richie. They get a lot of hate for being incredibly revealing however, if you have the accessory of a flat stomach to go with them…I say these are a must have! I will admit, this is a hard look to pull off which is most people stray away from it, but people once said the same about mom jeans and look at us now. Mom jeans and boyfriend jeans galore. Who knows? Low-rise jeans might be here for summer 2021. I guess this is a good time, if any, to finally fulfill that new year’s resolution to get in the gym.

Under-The-Knee Boots
Up until 2019, thigh high boots were a huge trend. If you were with the times, you most definitely have a black suede pair of thigh boots sitting in your closet as we speak. They were all the rage. A winter essential, I might add.
The versatility of the boots was demonstrated as women wore them to every event possible – sports games, dinners, movies…you name it. But at the start of 2020, we started to see these boots less and less and the knee-high boots craze began. This popular trend originated from the 60s, became popular again in the 90s, and are back once again.
Let’s hope knee-high boots are here to stay. They easily go with any outfit and can be worn during any season.

Tapestry Clothing
A new trend that’s been on the horizon is clothing made out of tapestry. It’s been turned into pants, shirts, and tote bags. I honestly think this is so creative and such a cool statement piece. I do not know how long this unique trend will last but I hope it lasts long enough for me to wear my own!
If you want a pair but don’t want to pay $200, go to your local thrift store and buy a tapestry blanket and turn into whatever you’d like. Note: you will have to sew, so if this isn’t your forte it might be best to buy it already pre-made.

Exposed Underwear
Alexa, play Thong by Sisqó.
This song inspired the visible thong trend of the early 2000s. Victoria Secrets thong sales even increased by 80%! At a time in 2021 where women are embracing their sexuality more freely, the timing makes perfect sense. Fair warning: you have to be careful with this trend right here because it can either be seen as high fashion or just downright trashy. Trust me, a little bit goes a long way. Recently, celebrities like Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, and Hailey Bieber were both seen sporting this look.

Velour Tracksuits
Last but certainly not least, we have one of my favorites: velour tracksuits! I remember growing up seeing older women wearing juicy couture sets wanting one exactly like I’m excited about this one. You can wear it fitted for a sexier look or more on the loose side for a casual look. Both are looks. I love the bright colors the most but neutral colors such as black and gray are more appropriate for everyday wear. I want them all!

I hope you enjoyed this article on my favorite current trends of 2020/2021. Which trend is your favorite and why??
