With endless fashion inspiration at your fingertips, it can be hard to not follow every trend on your feed. In the day and age where OOTDs are full of comments asking for brand names in hopes of replicating the exact look, creativity in fashion is a dying skill.
A few weeks ago we asked. “What city has the style game on lock?”
While friendly competition between each capital across the country ensued, another argument emerged in the comments.
“Social media killed regional fashion. They all look the same,” one commenter said with over 200 likes in support.
Sharing style tips in an instant across the country has made the fashion world more connected and unified. But as trends mix and merge, how do we define our own fashion sense outside of all the influence?
We wanted to know how do YOU find your own style in today’s social media world?
We took to our story to get your input and this is what some of you had to say.
FIND WHAT INSPIRES YOU
The first step to finding your style is figuring out a way to link together what kind of fashion resonates with you.
"Get inspired by people, and art you admire to help cultivate a reflection of yourself in the world," one commenter suggested.
SHUT OFF ALL NOISE
Cutting out all distractions and influences in your life is one way to hone in on your own inner creativity.
“Being trapped in my room for 4 months definitely did it, you can see the pivot on IG literally
lol,” one commenter stated.
UNFOLLOW ANYTHING THAT ISN’T INSPIRING
Following religious trend-followers can make it east to adopt that mindset too even if you don’t intend to.
“Don’t follow any influencers,” one commenter said.
DO WHAT YOU WANT
The key to unlocking your own style is having fun with what you wear at all times. If you’re happy wearing it, it’s more than likely true to your own.
“Rock what you like just make sure it’s fly af!” one commenter stated.
"Wear what you like regardless of trends," another commenter said.
INVESTIGATE YOUR STYLE
Don’t give up if you can’t find your exact style overnight. Finding your niche in fashion is a journey of self discovery.
“I’ve been curating my own style for over 15 years, so I know exactly what I like and where to look,” one commenter said.
SOMETIMES CREATIVITY CAN COST
Trendy items tend to be better on the budget than cutting edge couture, so sometimes creativity can be costly.
One commenter expressed that they feel like they haven’t found the full potential of their style
due to funds. “If you don’t have the money for it, buy what works,” they said.
