More than Music: Iconic Album Art

Shayla Chambers

What makes a memorable album cover? Apart from the songs that makeup the track list, the creativity that is brought to life in the development of album art can speak volumes. It also contributes to discussions on the intersections of fashion and music. Both art forms can function together to generate a lasting impression on audiences. There are even a number of artists that are known for gaining attention and subsequent listeners from the statement made through their cover art. Some are appreciated for their simple visual aesthetics and connection to the artist’s perspective that’s showcased through the relative music.

What’s New? Recent Favorites

In recent years, there has been no shortage of albums that have had an influence on fashion or included interesting elements of style. Beyonce, SZA, Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, and Summer Walker are some of the names that come to mind when pondering the topic. Cowboy Carter inspired a resurgence in both country music and fashion as Beyonce brought her talents to the genre. Fans attended concerts in the signature style. The magnitude can be further highlighted as aspects of the same style can be seen in everyday wear without being limited to events. The modern spin on the traditional “Cowgirl” proved to be a key moment beyond the context of the music.

How many people do you know can pull off a green fade? Probably more than before the launch of Frank Ocean's “Blonde”. The album art invokes a connection to his music much deeper than the color of his hair. Themes of masculinity and emotion expression are prevalent throughout the songs. Whether related to the context of his music or not, he certainly influenced a lot of hair dying choices, especially amongst men.

Summer Walker’s sophomore album, “Over It” is known for exploring the tumultuous emotions that can arise in romantic relationships. The imagery on the cover aligns with the feelings expressed and includes intricate detailing from the cherry rhinestone pattern on the du-rag to the layered gold jewelry. In addition to being visually appealing, we can observe the thoughtful direction used by the connection of the phone in the art to the branded phone booths that were used for the album’s promotion. This look has been recreated by many, which speaks to the impression it’s made on fans.

Let’s Take it Back: 80s and 90s

This conversation wouldn’t be complete without taking it back to the last few decades. Many artists paved the way and even served as a source of creative inspiration for the newer population. The fashion choices selected for album covers of groups like NWA and SWV can be seen as a reflection of the times. Although their music falls into two very different categories, the use of oversized denim and colored windbreakers are examples of the commonalities and expressions of culture.

RnB’s princess Aaliyah, is still known as a fashion icon. Appearing on her album covers with variations of street style and chic femininity, her style was often perceived as an embodiment of her soothing vocals. In some ways it could be seen as the perfect contrast with components such as dark shades and an air of mystery in the cover of “One in a Million”.

OutKast’s eclectic fashion is definitely an aspect of the group’s legacy that can be pictured in their album artwork. When analyzing their style the words futuristic and imaginative are appropriate descriptors. Breaking the mold by embracing a look that was very far from the norm is something to continually celebrate. The acclaimed and widely known album, Stankonia is a visual representation of the group’s music and the message that they portray.

The aforementioned are only a few out of many artists with notable album covers. This is certainly not an all encompassing list as there are a multitude who have produced a lasting impression through their music and artwork produced alongside it. What are some of your favorites? In what other ways can we observe or appreciate the connections between music and fashion?
