DC was the place to be this past weekend, as Howard Homecoming drew in the masses from near and far. The famous event marked the 100th Homecoming Anniversary and as tradition goes it was presented as the perfect opportunity for students and alumni to show off their school pride. However, the festivities were not limited to those with affiliation to the school as guests joined in on the celebration by going to events throughout the city. With a reason to celebrate comes a reason to dress for the occasion and to look your best while doing it. From the fashion show to the yard, looks were served all around.
Who’s Wearing What?
There isn’t a singular category that can be used to describe the array of outfits that people put together for their homecoming attire, however, we can name a few. Throughout the weekend, variations of the “preppy” aesthetic could be observed with a personalized spin often including a mash-up of different styles. This look has undoubtedly become a dominant trend recently, characterized by items such as pleated skirts and high boots. It also happens to be very on brand for college based fashion. Hints of a similar style could be seen as worn by the guys with combinations such as collared shirts under crewnecks. Amongst the men jerseys, graphic sweatshirts, and baggy distressed denim also seemed to be a favorite pick.
Although commonalities can be analyzed, there was still a unique spin involved in the assembly of every fit, making it obvious that detailed thought was involved in the process. Attendees definitely made a statement in a way that can be referred to as inspiration for years to come.

A Fashion Statement: Afrofuturism in Motion
On the topic of fashion it’s only right we mention the school fashion show. The “Centennial” theme drew inspiration from Afrofuturism and captivated audiences, both in the crowds and online. While demonstrating originality and refreshing creativity, the name also speaks to the school appreciation that was involved in the curation of the event. Models showcased eclectic pieces framed by intricate designs in the details of hair, makeup, and accessories. The culmination of creative genius displayed highlights the talent that exists at the university and sparks intrigue for what is yet to come.
Howard Homecoming was certainly one for the books and a moment for collegiate fashion. As the season continues we are eager to see how other HBCU’s demonstrate their school spirit in style.
