Beyond the Music: Skepta Makes Moves in Fashion

Shayla Chambers

Skepta is widely known for being a successful London based MC and rapper, however his endeavors extend beyond music and into other passions such as fashion and acting. Rising to fame in 2010, he is recognized as a groundbreaker amongst the grime scene. His strides played a major role in propelling the music from local appreciation to worldwide recognition. He has certainly made his mark with a discography including over 10 albums and many notable features. In 2021 he announced his retirement from music. Although he has returned to the craft recently, he still maintains a focus on his other callings alongside it.

Skepta’s brand MAINS launched in 2017 and is described as an expression of identity that’s rooted in authenticity. What sets the brand apart ? Simplicity that can be observed in the designs along with a balance established through variation in detailing, combined with a unique personal flair. This allows for the clothing to make a statement while being wearable. The featured lines include a range of high quality clothing essentials such as jackets, sweatsuits, and tees. Inspiration for the brand was drawn from Skepta’s family and experiences growing up in North London. In a Selfridges interview, he notes how his father’s style taught him that “the clothes don't make the man, the man makes the clothes”.  His personal style and appreciation for streetwear are highlighted as another component of inspiration. Post launch, MAINS was present at London Fashion Week and can still be exclusively found on the shelves of Selfridges. Exciting collaborations with brands like PUMA and a photo shoot with Naomi Campbell are some moments that reflect the momentum generated from Skepta’s creative aptitude.

As the brand continues to expand, there is no doubt that Skepta’s dreams to make his younger self proud have come to fruition. New advancements include runway appearances at London Fashion Week SS '25, a Kickers footwear collaboration, and most recently - the opening of a pop-up displaying the Season 2 collection. Located in Central London, the event offered a selection of styles to shop from and a space for fans to connect with the brand's vision in person. We are excited to witness what’s on the horizon for MAINS and Skepta’s upcoming creative ventures.
