A Tribute To "Girlfriends"

Writer's picture: Jessica PittmanJessica Pittman

The popular 2000s tv show, Girlfriends, was recently released onto the Netflix platform and I, for one, binge watched the entire thing. At the time of its airing, I was too young to watch and comprehend everything that was occurring but now being in my 20s, it's a show that I can thoroughly enjoy. I love the representation for black women - how each character is at a different stage in her life which are stages that I think most women go through...wanting a successful career, being incredibly financially stable, desiring a family, and ultimately discovering her purpose in life.

While watching, I was closely paying attention to the plot and characters of course, but I couldn't help but notice the fashion displayed in 'Girlfriends". It encompassed a 90s vintage vibe mixed with the new era of the 2000s. Here are the best outfits out of the entire show. (Yes, I went through the entire catalogue of seasons again and personally screenshotted each one.) Enjoy! Leave a comment on which main character you dress most similar to. Is it Joan, Toni, Lynn, or Maya?

JOAN CLAYTON

THE main character. THE moment. THE star of the show. Joan Clayton's style could be described as chic, relaxed, and classic. She was also business professional most of the times since her character worked at a law firm, but her outfits were the best when she wasn't working! My favorite outfit from her has to be the green cutout dress below coincidentally. I won't spoil the episode but the people that saw her in it, didn't seem to be the biggest fan of it. However, I would definitely wear this to go out in. Joan's favorite things to wear were crop tops, halter tops, and cargos. Can we please bring the deep v-neck sleeveless crop tops back?

TONI CHILDS

Let's be honest...one thing Toni Childs never lacked is style. The first top she is shown wearing in the photos shown is none other than Jean Paul Gaultier, a popular French designer with unique designs. It's one of my favorite looks from her. Toni Childs style can be described as classy, sophisticated, and business professional which perfectly matches her independent attitude. She's truly a monochromatic queen. The all cream suit she wore is very comparable to the outfit Michelle Obama wore during President Biden's inauguration. Funny thing is, that's exactly who Toni would've liked to be.

LYNN ANN SEARCY

Lynn's style was in a whole other dimension from the other characters. Her character was rebellious, indecisive, artistic, spontaneous, and carefree which 100% translated to her grunge style represented on the show. I personally love Lynn's style. It resonates more with my tomboy style of fashion. The timelessness of fashion trends can definitely be seen in her outfits - black chunky knee-high boots, sheer tops, crop tops, baggy pants, and distressed clothing. I've said my favorites for the other outfits so I'll tell you my favorite outfits of Lynn's. It would have to be the graphic jean skirt and purple crop top. It's simple, but it works and stands out from the crowd.

MAYA WILKES

Maya Wilkes radiates girl-next-door energy. Her style can be described as casual, flirty, and feminine. I had the most trouble finding fashionable outfits for Maya, I can't lie. Her character was known for being frugal and cautious with her money. Spoiler Alert: there was an episode once where her friends were trying to convince her to buy a $300 dress and it ended up causing financial issues in her marriage. However, Maya definitely did have some stand-outs. I absolutely loved the look with the brown and white splattered halter top, jeans, and knee-high brown boots. The open back really does it for me.
