Over the last few years, a number of Black owned brands have emerged, specializing in or offering collections of handbags. With a wider variety to choose from, it’s easier to find the right option that appeals to personal style and needs. Now that the holiday season is approaching, it’s the perfect time to explore what’s currently in and plan for the next purchase while supporting a Black owned business.

Anima Iris
The roots of the brand Anima Iris are just as vibrant and engaging as the products they offer. African culture and historical context is noted as a source of inspiration in the designing process, “Like the palm oil reds of Cameroon’s traditional Bamileke cloth, or the notable geometric shapes of Ghana’s kente, Africa’s bold history is reflected in the molds of our pieces.” The bags are all handmade in Africa with expert care, ensuring a final product that is both visually appealing and of long-lasting quality. Their pieces can be found online on their website, as well as in stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.

Ree Projects
Functional elegance is a phrase that can be used to describe Ree Projects and their range of bags. Although there are multiple designs and colors, the chic simplicity of each is a common theme. The brand places an emphasis on upholding pillars of women empowerment, sustainability, and ethical practices. In a Forbes interview, founder Desiree Kleinen describes how her time working with luxury fashion houses like Karl Lagerfeld imparted valuable experience. This experience was leveraged in the creation of her own brand that was conceptualized long before its global launch in 2019.
It’s always a wise choice to diversify the types of brands that we invest in and more importantly to support Black owned companies that are still a minority in the space of fashion and handbags. What are some other brands we should be on the lookout for this season?
